Lisbon TEFL experience: our Iberia Teacher interns

Meet our TEFL Interns: Alfoncina, Sophie and Ciara! They are currently in Lisbon completing an internship in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, funded by the Turing Scheme via Iberia Teacher sending organization from UK. Our interns have dedicated the last two months to their professional development and have been strongly immersed in the local culture! Here go their testimonials:

Alfoncina – Linguagest

I'm working at ‘Linguagest’, a language company that primarily teach in online and sometimes in-person English classes. My responsibilities include lesson preparation, creating teaching materials and additional tasks like proofreading website content and developing lesson plans for advanced English levels (C1 and C2).

Have you found your work here productive for your studies?

At times, tasks are quite manageable and quick to accomplish, especially since I don't have heavy teaching hours. Overall, it's provided a good work-life balance.

So, you've been able to explore Lisbon?

Yes, I've had plenty of opportunities to explore Lisbon!

How have you enjoyed your time in Lisbon?

Lisbon is an amazing city, I could definitely see myself living here in the future…

Sophie – Astoria International School

I work at ‘Astoria International’, an international school with students ranging from 2 to 16 years old. I assisted classes for 3-5-year-olds, and now I'm teaching older students in the lower secondary school. It’s been really good to teach a range of ages and have experience in teaching like marking work.

How do you feel about living in Lisbon?

I'm really enjoying it, Lisbon is a very sociable city, with so many people around.

Ciara – Berlitz

I'm working at ‘Berlitz’, a language school where I primarily teach business English to adults through one-on-one online lessons. Occasionally, I also have in-person sessions with an eight-year-old student a couple times a week.

How have you found working in Lisbon?

I really enjoy it! Mostly due to the flexibility of online teaching. With morning and evening lessons, I have lots of free time during the day to explore Lisbon. It's a great city, and like Alfoncina, I can see myself returning for future visits. We live on the green line so it’s really easy to get into the centre.

What's been your favourite experience in Lisbon so far?

I really enjoyed taking the ferry across the river to Almada, and strolling at sunset, admiring the view of the bridge…
