The funiculars of Lisbon!

Lisbon is famous for their funiculars! The three main trams are called Elevador do Lavra, Elevador da Glória and Elevador da Bica. In addition, Lisbon also has the famous elevator called Elevador de Santa Justa.

The lifts are actually so famous they are estimated to carry around 3.5 million passengers every year! Many people presume that the funiculars are just for tourists however whilst they are certainly a popular attraction, locals still rely on them as their main call for transport within the city.

The three funiculars were introduced in the late nineteenth century, making the tasks of conquering the hills of Lisbon more achievable.

To experience Lisbon’s famous transport, a ticket bought onboard costs €2.90. Insider tip! If you get a 24 hour metro pass, this also includes trams and buses so make sure to get your value for money!

Now you have your tickets sorted, when can you enjoy the funiculars? The trams depart around every 12 minutes from both sides, starting at 7.15am on weekdays, 8:45am on Saturdays, and 9:15am on Sundays. The last departure is at 11:55pm on weekdays and Sundays, and at 12:25am on Saturdays.

However, the Santa Justa elevator does operate on different times, which are between 7.30am-11pm and runs around every 10 minutes.

Elevador do Lavra

The oldest funicular in Lisbon! Launched in 1884, it connects the streets Câmara Pestana and Largo da Anunciada.

Fact time... When first introduced, the trams did run on water however have now been converted to electricity as part of being more environmentally friendly. The three funiculars originally were brown until they were painted yellow in the 1930s.

Elevador Da Gloria

Being the second funicular opened to the Public in 1885, Elevador da Gloria is considered the most popular funicular! This is due to it’s route that connects Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo to the Bairro Alto. Bairro Alto, a well-known area for Erasmus students to gather for a nice drink! At the top, you can enjoy some amazing views over Lisbon from San Pedro de Alcántara viewpoint.

Elevador Da Bica

A national monument since 2002, Elevador Da Bica offers a dramatic contrast between the daunting hill and river within the backdrop. This funicular is the most pleasing journey, passing the colourful houses and flowery verandas. Perfect for tourists to capture their photographs to show they really have done Lisbon!

Elevador de Santa Justa

The Elevador de Santa Justa, also extremely popular, also provides the option for a more easier journey to Bairro Alto! The elevator is 147 Ft (45m) tall and has been in operation since 1902.

At the top, there is an overlook that gives fantastic views across the area. Lines can be very long on the way up, so a good trick is to get the elevator down instead!
